September is here, bringing cooler days, quieter stretches of river, and one of our favorite times of year on the North Platte.

As summer begins to fade, the cooling weather creates more comfortable conditions for anglers and guests alike. Whether you are planning one more getaway before winter or already looking ahead to colder-weather adventures, there is still plenty to enjoy at Trout On™ Inn.

September Fishing Report
Grey Reef flows dropped to approximately 500 CFS in late August. At these lower flows, wade access is excellent, and the river is fishing well, but clarity can vary after rain. The cleanest water and most consistent fishing have recently been closer to the dam, while conditions may become more off-color farther downstream.

Early-morning Trico spinner falls remain a highlight, with caddis continuing to produce and PMDs and Yellow Sallies still making occasional appearances. Nymphing remains the most consistent approach. Streamers are also worth working near deeper pools, banks, and structure, especially when the water carries a little color.

Water temperatures can still climb on warm September afternoons, so carry a stream thermometer, fish early when necessary, and continue practicing careful catch-and-release. Land fish quickly, keep them in the water, and check current river conditions and any angling advisories before heading out.

As the month progresses, cooler weather should improve conditions and begin the transition into fall fishing. Brown trout will soon start preparing for their annual spawn. Please watch carefully for spawning beds, known as redds, and avoid wading through or fishing directly over them. Giving spawning fish plenty of room helps protect the next generation of this incredible fishery.

If we could recommend only five flies for September, they would be the Red Sparkle Worm, Sparkle Wing RS2, Drowned Trico Spinner, Pine Squirrel Leech and Olive Sparkle Minnow. Together, they offer dependable options for the morning hatch, subsurface fishing and changing water clarity. As always, San Juan/Rock and hoppers are recommended throughout the season.
