U.S. Chamber of Commerce Highlights Industries Most Affected by Labor Shortages

March 21, 2025 – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has released an analysis detailing how various industries are being impacted by ongoing labor shortages, a trend that has persisted since the COVID-19 pandemic. ?

Key Findings:

  • Leisure and Hospitality: This sector continues to experience the highest quit rates, with the accommodation and food services subsector consistently around or above 4% since July 2022. Despite losing 781,000 workers in January 2024, the industry hired 1.05 million people that same month, maintaining the highest hiring rate among all industries since November 2020, ranging between 6% to nearly 19%. ?

  • Education and Health Services; Professional and Business Services: These sectors consistently exhibit the highest number of job openings. The professional and business services sector encompasses a broad spectrum of occupations, including legal services, scientific research, landscaping, cleaning, and waste disposal. ?

  • Financial Activities and Manufacturing: These more stable, higher-paying industries have experienced lower quit rates compared to others. ?
