Spectacular ice-age mammals at the Tate

Spectacular ice-age mammals, including mammoths and saber-toothed cats, are the focus of the Saturday Club at the Tate Geological Museum on Oct. 3 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Spectacular Ice-Age Mammals and Hands-On Ice Age Fun

The Ice Age is considered one of the most interesting periods in geological history and featured many familiar and iconic mammals of Wyoming, including the pronghorn, bison, and grizzly bear. “At the same time, there were spectacular beasts that are no longer with us today, like the mammoth and the sabertooth,” said Russell Hawley, Tate Geological Museum education specialist.

During the October edition of Saturday Club, participants will learn about those “wild and woolly” mammals from the Ice Age and then build their own prehistoric zoo. Younger participants can decorate their pre-cut stand-up animals, while older ones can use the templates to trace and cut out their own. “There’s also the option of designing and folding their own custom-designed beast from scratch,” said Hawley.

Other activities will also be available after the main event, including “Find-the-Mammal Skulls” and “Show Hoplophoneus the Way Home.” Participants can also make their own bookmark.

Saturday Club is free and open to children ages 7-14. The Tate Geological Museum is located at 2332 Lisco Dr., at the southern end of the Casper College campus, near the T. rex sculpture.
