About the Workshop For this class, Joy Jones will introduce a variety of slab forms that can be taken from basic to beautiful. Even beginners will be able to make large sophisticated work after learning some simple skills. Students will experience the endless options that drape molds and soft forms can offer while utilizing texture to dress up their work. Students will also learn about adding feet and elevating their pieces to increase complexity. We will have opportunities to decorate slab pieces using graffito, mishima, marbling, carving, and sprigging techniques and we will learn how to overcome difficulties with drawing and how to develop ideas from very simple to complex. In addition to building new skills this workshop will help build and strengthen studio routine and creative practice. This class will be the beginning of endless ideas and beautiful final projects that students can enjoy. About Joy Jones Joy Jones is a Wyoming native who had her first clay experience as a Freshman at Lander Valley High School in Lander, Wyoming. After high school, she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Wyoming. Needing a more intensive ceramic experience, Joy attended Utah State University where she took an additional post baccalaureate year to develop her skills and build her portfolio. She then attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana where she completed her MFA studies in 1994. While living in New Orleans, Joy had unique opportunities to work with Geffen Productions, creating movie props for “Hard Target”, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and “Interview with a Vampire”, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. After graduation, Joy returned to Riverton, Wyoming where she refurbished an old gas station and turned it into a clay studio and retail space. After six years of working as a production potter, she accepted a position teaching art at a Wind River High School, where she remained for 18 years. Joy’s career path has led her full circle and she now teaches art where she first became enamored with clay, Lander Valley High School. Joy also teaches at Pathfinder High School in Lander. The change from production potter to educator has allowed Joy the freedom to create her current, more decorative body of work. Her work has been exhibited in the Workhouse Clay International Show, Delectable, IdentiTEA, Serve it Up, and many other shows across the country. She has taught workshops at Clay Arts Vegas and Potters Sanctuary. Currently, her days are filled with making and carving ceramic work, teaching art, riding horses, and spending time with her husband and 2 young children...a busy but gratifying life.
