SUMMARY:2016 Pony Express Re-Ride
DESCRIPTION:The 156th Anniversary of the Pony Express will be celebrated by a re-run of the famed mail service. Over 600 riders and horses will carry mail by relay over the original trail\, June 15 - 25\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe National Pony Express Association will carry personal mail and Commemorative Letters from St. Joseph\, Missouri\, to Sacramento\, California. The first rider departs the Patee House\, in St. Joseph\, 10:00 A.M.\, June 15th\, and the last rider rides into Pony Express Plaza\, in Old Sacramento\, at 11:30 a.m.\, June 25\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe 1\,966 mile route will be over the Pony Express National Historic Trail from Missouri\, across Kansas\, Nebraska\, Colorado\, Wyoming\, Utah\, and Nevada to California\, the historic western Terminus of the Pony Express. \n\n\n\nThis was the route of the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company. Founded by the Missouri freighting firm of Russell\, Majors\, and Waddell\, it carried letters and telegrams from April 1860 to November 1861\, on the Central Route through Salt Lake and Placerville\, to San Francisco. \n\nIt was a short-lived mail service\, but it proved the Central Route passable year-round. It became a symbol of the Old West\, its story retold in books and reenactments\, like that of the NPEA. In 1992\, Congress added the trail to the National Trails System as a Historic Trail\, administered by the National Park Service.\n\n\n\nAdditional information can be obtained by writing: National Pony Express Association\, P.O BOX 236\, Pollock Pines\, CA 95726\, or by calling (916) 332-8382
